We are incredibly lucky here in West Berkshire to have so many fantastic places to eat. From quintessentially English country pubs to fine dining restaurants and lots of great chains in Newbury and Hungerford town, we have the pick of the bunch. Here’s our pick of some of the best. 1. Mio Fiore

This rustic and authentic Italian restaurant in the quaint setting of Inches Yard in Newbury, and now also on Hungerford High Street, serves genuine homemade Italian food using regional Italian ingredients. 2. Five Bells Wickham

One of Made In The Shire’s favourite places, this fantastic pub, the Five Bells in Wickham is a must. This traditional 17th century pub is surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire countryside, just off the M4, making it the perfect pit-stop to grab a spot of lunch with friends. Top chef, Duncan Jones, serves up delicious, quality pub grub using the finest ingredients. 3. Dew Pond

Located in the midst of the countryside in the rural hamlet of Old Burghclere, near Newbury, this fine dining restaurant is a real hidden gem. Offering an intimate, yet refined and elegant setting, the Dew Pond is the place to book for a special occasion. Serving French-inspired classical dishes using quality locally sourced seasonal ingredients from Chef Patron, Keith Marshall, paired with the finest wines, this will be a meal you won’t forget.

4. Eliane

This Middle Eastern-inspired treasure of a café on the Hungerford High Street serves the most dazzling and appealing display of delicious, fresh, and healthy dishes you’ll find for miles. The menu changes daily, so there’s always plenty of choice. An ideal option for breakfast, morning coffee or lunch, the menu also offers an impressive list of smoothies which are made to order. 5. Bill's

You can’t go wrong with this trusty, traditional chain, Bill’s. Perfectly situated in Newbury’s market square, grab a table outside and watch the town’s comings and goings, or take a booth inside for cosy get-togethers. The ideal spot for brunch, or any meal for that matter, the menu offers hearty, yet refined European comfort food. Bill’s is always a very popular choice indeed.

6. Hare & Hounds

This recently renovated 17th century Georgian pub, Hare & Hounds has opened its doors again. With its equestrian theme and rich history, this pub, located near Newbury racecourse, offers fresh seasonal food, craft beers, and a friendly atmosphere. There are also private dining options and rooms to stay. You’ll be spoilt for choice.

7. Goat on the Roof

This new establishment in the centre of Newbury is a British tapas restaurant and wine bar. Offering small but perfectly formed sharing plates of stunning seasonal tapas and a wine list of over 70 natural and sustainable wines, Goat on The Roof is a must-visit. Choose to dine in the ground-floor restaurant or grab a glass of wine in the first-floor wine bar and enjoy the views over the Kennet Canal.

8. The Woodspeen

This gorgeous restaurant situated in the West Berkshire countryside has a Michelin star, an award-winning wine list, a top-notch seasonal menu from quality local homegrown ingredients, and a superb atmosphere. It also has an intimate and cosy bar area where you can enjoy a cocktail before dining. The Woodspeen also has a fabulous cookery school which runs a wide range of courses, from butchery to bread-making – perhaps an ideal gift for a loved one? – and hosts a variety of events, including wine tastings. This restaurant is a real treat and is up there with some of the best in London. There’s no doubt about it: you’ll want to come back time and again.

9. Carnarvon Arms

Located just next to Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey), this wonderful pub and hotel offers a real retreat in the country. This stylish upmarket French brasserie chain, Côte, is always a firm favourite. Enjoy delicious French regional food and traditional classics, washed down with a full-bodied glass of red. With its elegant décor and great atmosphere, it’s hard to believe this is a chain.

11. Cobrizo Lounge

Cobrizo Lounge has something for everyone. The all-day menus have a bit of everything from traditional pub grub to Spanish tapas and Churros. 12. George & Dragon

The ever-popular George & Dragon in Hurstbourne Tarrant is set in the heart of the village making it a perfect pub to walk to. The 16th century coaching inn boasts woodburning flreplaces and plenty of cosy nooks and crannies for an intimate supper. Family and dog friendly, and with rooms to boot, the menu focuses on seasonal British cuisine. The ideal pub after a long walk in the countryside.
